Western Rye Weapon Tier List
Rank the job, not a damage table the studio never published.
Players search for a Western Rye tier list because the gunbelt is short and the desert is loud. Early Access ships classic western revolvers, shotguns, and rifles — including the repeaters the studio groups with that family — and promises more iron later. This page ranks those families by job, not by fake DPS. Nixalon has not published a public damage spreadsheet. A pretty repeater you cannot repair is still a stick.
The gameplay trailer in the middle of this article is cadence and muzzle flash. Use it to see how fights move. Use the ranks below to pick what you can maintain. Pair this page with the loadout picker and the systems guide on weapons.
How to read this Early Access list
S-tier here means “this family solves the job you actually have this week.” It does not mean a hidden gold revolver exists in a crate. Day 3 rebalanced container loot and several crafting quantities. A winter demo screenshot is not a contract. Repair is part of the official loop, including oiling and maintenance called out in long-form previews. Rank a gun you will feed.
Husks change every rank. They are blind and sound-sensitive. A loud “best” rifle on a deserted street is a dinner bell. How to beat Husks is required reading even if you came here for bison. Bandits want routes. Cultists want corners. Arson gangs want wood. Factions names the humans so you stop blaming every burned fence on the sky.
Family ranks by job
Homestead defense — shotgun first. Doorways, barns, and anything that already hugged the porch belong to spread and panic. Keep one near the door you can actually close. Homestead is architecture; the shotgun is the valve. A rifle on the ridge is backup, not the doorbell gun.
Town and controlled shots — revolver first. Alleys, vendors, and the shot you can walk away from belong to a sidearm you can holster. First-look footage treats the revolver as default language. It forgives aim and punishes panic reloads. Holster before the clothier. Clothing is not a gunfight.
Hunting and ridges — rifle or repeater first. Bison, long sightlines, and the arson rider you would rather not meet at the gate belong to reach. Hunting wants this family. Caves want something you can lift in a crouch. A ridge rifle in a cellar is a doorframe tax. Caves is the commute.
Husk streets — revolver or shotgun, never a firing-range rifle. Walk. Bait. Take the shot you can leave. A magazine dump is a second audience. If you came to rank “best Husk gun,” the real S-tier is silence.
Carry one primary and one backup when you can maintain both. Carry three only if crafting has become a religion. In co-op, do not clone kits. Ridge, door, talker. Four shotguns in a canyon teach sightlines the hard way.
What this list will not do
It will not name a 1.0 legendary set. More revolvers, shotguns, and repeaters are on the Early Access shopping list. When a new family ships, the Updates Hub will log it. Until then, upgrade what you fire. Spend ingots on this week’s job: porch, hunt, or story ride.
A gun does not water the well. Water and wells still comes first. A gun does not move a stove; that is the Demolition Hammer. Finish a fight, close the door, repair at home. Return to the Combat Hub when you can say why you brought this iron, not only that it looked mean in a screenshot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What is the best weapon in Western Rye?
The family that matches the job: shotgun for the porch, revolver for town, rifle for ridges and bison. Silence still beats all three on a Husk street.
Is this a numeric DPS tier list?
No. The studio has not published a public damage table. Ranks are jobs plus repair cost, not invented numbers.
Should I use a rifle on Husks?
Only if you already accepted the noise. Hearing is their vision. A walk you can leave is often the real upgrade.
Will more guns change this list?
Yes, when Steam notes add families. Until then, maintain the three that already shipped.
