How to Find Sarah’s Bag in Western Rye
A small satchel beside a broken wagon, not a riddle hidden in every crate.
Sarah’s Bag is the first-quest pickup players search for by name. It is not the same beat as A Roof Against the Wind. Demo footage and Early Access reports agree on the shape of the job: talk to Sarah, follow her carriage clue, pick up a bag of medical supplies, and take it back toward a Marshall-shaped NPC in a habitable town. This page is how to find it, how to return it, and how to stop when the handoff is actually stuck.
The GameEdged recording in the middle of this article is a Next Fest demo, not a contract for August prices or crate loot. Use it to recognize the bag, the wagon, and the ride toward town. After the 27 August Day 3 notes, Nixalon said Sarah’s Bag is significantly more visible. That is a lighting and object pass, not a skip code.
How to start the bag step
Do not hunt the satchel before thirst is solved. Getting started still owns hour one: well, door, stove. A dead courier does not finish a medical delivery. Ride a living town, not a Husk mall. Map and locations names pockets such as New Dawn Town. The return NPC sits where people still speak.
Open the quest log and activate the live objective. World markers lie when another prompt is on screen. Proof the conversation finished: Sarah’s line about the carriage should add a bag step. In the recorded demo she is upstairs in an outpost building and says the carriage broke down by the gate. Early Access can move a room. Believe the log in your build, then ride the marker.
How to find the satchel on the ground
Search the ground beside the broken wagon near the outpost gate, not the wagon bed and not every corpse on the trail. The bag is a small light-colored satchel. High cameras miss it. Sprint-looting misses the interaction label. Walk. Look down. Wait for the Sarah’s Bag prompt. When it works, the object becomes a quest item and the objective flips to the return step.
If the label will not appear, patch first. Day 3 called this out by name. Exit Steam’s download queue, relaunch, and open the log before you reload the save. Mixed co-op clients invent missing bags. The host’s build is the law. Do not sell the satchel, stash it in a crate, or drop it for a friend as a joke. Quest items are not trade goods. Trading can wait.
How to return the bag without overlapping prompts
Ride back to the town NPC the log names. Holster the rifle. Close the shop UI. Finish any combat prompt. Then talk. Demo footage shows a failed handoff after a clean pickup; reloading, freeing inventory, and collecting the bag a second time did not prove a fix in that recording. Day 3 improved visibility. It did not publish a hidden skip.
Try this once, in order: Steam idle, exact return objective active, bag still listed as a quest item, approach without a vendor or reload prompt overlapping the talk, write down the line you hear. If all five still fail, stop. Do not attack the NPC. Do not wipe the ranch. Screenshot the log and the item, note the date of the installed update, and report through Steam or Nixalon’s Discord (discord.gg/XjPCVPP8mE). Bugs and fixes keeps Sarah’s Bag separate from the roof mission. Story and NPCs keeps the Marshall labeled.
How this quest sits next to the rest of the first week
A finished bag does not water the well. It does not close a door. Plant corn after you can drink. If the tracker then sends you onto a roof, that is A Roof Against the Wind, a day-one story gate, not a second satchel. If a later log names What the Earth Remembers, treat it as another named beat: patch, retry, report. Do not invent a shrine walkthrough the studio has not published.
Husks still hear a victory volley on the trail home. Walk. How to beat Husks owns the volume knob. A horse makes the outpost reachable; get off it before the wagon search. Horse riding is the travel page.
When a later Steam note changes the pickup, the Updates Hub moves first. Until then: log, ground beside the wagon, return without a stacked prompt. Then go back to the Guides Hub and put the medical bag out of your personality. It was a delivery, not a personality.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Where is Sarah’s Bag in Western Rye?
Look on the ground beside the broken wagon near the outpost gate, not in the wagon bed. Use the live quest marker after Day 3 made the satchel easier to see.
Is Sarah’s Bag the same as A Roof Against the Wind?
No. The bag is the first-quest pickup. The roof mission was a separate day-one story fix.
The Marshall will not take the bag.
Patch, activate the return objective, approach without a shop or combat prompt, then stop and report if it still fails. Do not discard the item.
Did Day 3 fix Sarah’s Bag?
Day 3 made the bag significantly more visible. It did not publish a skip. Visibility and a broken handoff are different problems.
