How to Raise Livestock in Western Rye

The official live-off-the-land pitch names chickens, cattle, and pigs beside corn, wheat, beans, and barley. Farming is the planter. This page is the pen. Early Access already treats animals as food engines you keep at home, not as a cosmetic pack you dump in the yard for screenshots. If you came here from a first-look video of someone axe-murdering a pig beside an NPC farm, that is a crime scene, not a ranch guide.

Build the shell first. A pen without a homestead door is a buffet for weather, Husks, and anyone with a torch. Weather and needs still owns thirst; animals do not replace a well. Plant the four-stage crops on farming so the ranch has calories while the herd is still an idea. Then fence what you can repair.

How to ranch without starving the people

Treat livestock as a slow loop, the same way crops are a slow loop. You do not panic-buy a cow at dusk and eat steak at dawn. Buy or gather starter animals when the stove works and the well is in. Roadside traders in habitable towns already sell eggs, milk, and meat in demo and first-look footage. That stall is a bridge, not a career. Trading fills gaps. The pen is supposed to close those gaps later.

Chickens are the small clock: eggs, noise, easy to lose to a raid. Cattle are bulk and a bigger silhouette on the ridge. Pigs are meat with opinions and a smell that might as well be a quest marker. The store page does not publish feed recipes or a breeding spreadsheet. Play the animals that exist in your build. If a bench asks for a product you do not have, cook what you do have on the Homestead Stove. Cooking and brewing is where meat becomes a meal that actually does something.

Do not hunt your own yard. Hunting and fishing is for bison in the fields and fish at Lake Augustine. Footage already tells you not to touch the farmer’s animals. Your pen is not a shooting gallery. A revolver volley at the fence is how Husks RSVP and how factions notice wood worth burning.

How to protect a loud pantry

Animals are loot with legs and lungs. Bandits like supply routes. Arson renegades like timber. A cannibal cult likes isolated kitchens; a livestock yard is an isolated kitchen with extra screaming. Close the loop of walls. Hitch or stall what you can. Day 3 added a Demolition Hammer so you can pick up and move placed furniture — use it to unstick a trough you dropped in a doorway, not to delete the only cover you had.

In co-op, assign a wrangler. Four people feeding four animals at dusk is a concert. One person pulls eggs while another watches the ridge. Day 3 also fixed friend-dropped loot and world pickups; if a shared carcass will not lift, patch before you accuse the host of greed.

Sleep still matters. A tired posse leaves gates open. The official co-op copy says you can face the night or sleep through it together. Face it if the pen is full. Sleep if the pen is a sketch.

How livestock sits next to caves and towns

Ore still comes from caves. Do not park cattle on a mine mouth. Do not ride a horse through the pen to feel like a legend; horses belong on the trail, and Day 3 even had to dry out a watery hoof sound. Towns sell the emergency carton. The ranch sells the week.

Clothing does not keep chickens alive. Buy a hat after the gate latches. Clothing is vanity with a shopkeep. This page is protein.

Early Access will add more barns, buildings, and recipes. Nixalon said so in the FAQ. Do not wait for a catalog of rare breeds. Raise what the current loop feeds, cook it, and close the door. When a patch names a new animal or a new stall, it will land on the Updates Hub. Until then, a fenced noisy yard plus a stove beats a cinematic herd you cannot carry home.

If you only needed permission to skip livestock on night one, take it. Plant, drink, sleep. Add the pen when the planter is already working. Return to the Survival Hub when the first eggs are not a miracle.
