Western Rye Clothing and Apparel
Look like an outlaw after you can drink. Not before.
Player customization is one of the loops Nixalon listed as already implemented for Early Access: changing clothing and apparel, not a full fashion MMO. Steam Next Fest notes also advertised expanded shops for clothing and gear. This page is how to use that fantasy without spending the first dollars on a hat while thirst writes your obituary. A closed door still beats a legendary duster.
Create the outlaw you actually want to look at, then ignore fashion until the well works. Getting started still owns hour one. Character create is not a survival stat. The canyon does not grade your silhouette.
How to buy clothes without going broke
Ride a habitable town. The map names pockets such as New Dawn Town, Sunnyvale Town, and Leak Water Town. Deserted streets are not boutiques; they are Husk malls. Interact with the shopkeep, not the scenery. Demo and first-look footage shows food stalls first — milk, water, eggs, meat. Clothing counters sit in the same living towns, not in a separate fashion district the studio forgot to ship.
Dollars share the inventory with nails, cartridges, and doctor’s tonic. Treat cash as a gap-filler. A homestead stove and a crop planter are cheaper than a lifetime of looking expensive while hungry. Trading is the wider shop guide. This page is the reminder that apparel is a later verb. Day 3 rebalanced loot tables; a crate that used to cough a coat may now cough scrap. Believe the crate.
Towns Many Hands mixed trader biographies until day two. If a clothier recites the blacksmith’s life story, patch, then buy. Duplicated vendor lines during quest steps were a Day 3 fix. Do not invent lore from a repeated sentence. The missions walkthrough is the order of operations. Bugs and fixes is the patch order.
How clothing sits next to guns and weather
Apparel is not armor with a hidden DR table the studio published. It is identity. Sandstorms and rain still punish exposed work; weather does not care that your coat is rare. A shotgun still owns doorways. A rifle still owns ridges. Dress for the town street, fight with the gun you can repair. Weapons and the loadout picker are the combat pages. This page will not compute damage from a vest.
Co-op groups should not all stand in the tailor while a Husk concert starts on the boardwalk. Assign one shopper. Four people clicking the same dummy is how dialogues desync. After day two you can invite more than one friend; after Day 3 you can pick up what they drop. That does not mean four wallets should empty the hat rack. Share a ranch look if you must. Share a door policy first. Co-op is the social rules.
Saloon interiors are where clothing screenshots happen. Day 3 added saloon music and stopped NPC dialogue looping after you close a conversation. Enjoy the room. Then leave. A pretty vest in a looping audio bug is still a bug. Collision on saloon doors was on the same note; update if you wedge in the batwings.
What Early Access still withholds
The studio promised more clothing and character apparel before 1.0, plus more NPC personality so shops feel like people. Do not stall a well waiting for a legendary set. Wear what the current shops sell. When a new rack arrives, the Updates Hub will say so. The launch trailer in the demo vs Early Access page is mood, not a catalog.
If you only needed permission to look like a cowboy, take it — after water, a roof, and one cooked meal. If you needed permission to skip fashion forever, you also have it. The frontier grades thirst, not drip. Return to the World Hub when the hat is a habit, not a personality.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Can I change clothes in Western Rye Early Access?

Where do I buy gear and hats?
In habitable town shops. Next Fest notes already advertised clothing and gear counters. Deserted streets are not stores.
Does clothing act as armor?
The studio has not published a public damage table for outfits. Treat apparel as looks. Repair guns and close doors.
Should I buy a hat on hour one?
No. Well, door, stove, seeds. Fashion after you can sleep without the wind in your inventory.
